Unit 8 A green world

1. treat something used so that it can be used again

(1) so that的意思是“為了；以致”，它引導(dǎo)目的狀語(yǔ)從句和結(jié)果狀語(yǔ)從句。例如：

They opened a technical training course so that the managers and clerks could attend it during their spare time．他們開(kāi)了一個(gè)技術(shù)訓(xùn)練班，為了經(jīng)理和職員們?cè)跇I(yè)余的時(shí)間可以去上課。

Please switch the light on so that we can see what it is．

請(qǐng)開(kāi)燈，讓我們看一下它是什么東西。

I took an early bus so that I got there in time．

我乘了早班公共汽車(chē)，及時(shí)到了那里。

【拓展】

so… that…的意思是“如此……以至于……”，它引導(dǎo)結(jié)果狀語(yǔ)從句。在口語(yǔ)中，so…that…的that常被省去。例如：

She felt so sad that tears came to her eyes．

她非常悲傷，淚水盈眶。

John was so drunk（that）he could not stand still．

約翰醉得站也站不住了。

He spoke so rapidly（that）we could hardly follow him．

他說(shuō)得很快，我們很難聽(tīng)清楚他在說(shuō)什么。

2. Really? What do they do to keep their country clean?

keep + 名詞 / 代詞+ 形容詞，意為“使……保持某種狀態(tài)”。例如：

Keep the door open, please. 請(qǐng)讓門(mén)開(kāi)著。

Keep the window closed. 關(guān)著窗戶(hù)。

Coats can keep you warm. 外套能使你暖和。

【拓展】

(1) keep sth.意為“保存某物，保管某物”。例如：

How long can I keep the book? 這本書(shū)我能借多長(zhǎng)時(shí)間？

(2) keep sb. doing sth.使（某人）不停做某事。例如：

I’m sorry for keeping you waiting so long. 對(duì)不起，讓你久等了。

3. Coal, oil and natural gas are not only useful for families, but have a wider use for factories.

(1) not only...but (also)的意思是“不但……而且……”，連接兩個(gè)并列成分，如果連接兩個(gè)主語(yǔ)的時(shí)候，謂語(yǔ)動(dòng)詞和后面的主語(yǔ)保持一致。例如：

Not only my mother but (also) I like to go to the garden.

不僅媽媽而且我也喜歡去公園。

He can play not only the piano but also the violin. 他不僅會(huì)彈鋼琴，還會(huì)拉小提琴。

He was not only a writer but (also) an actor. 他不僅是一位作家，而且是一位演員。

(2) 以not only…but also 開(kāi)頭的句子往往引起倒裝。

Not only did he complain about the food, but he refused to pay for it.

他不僅抱怨飯不好吃，而且拒絕付飯錢(qián)。

4. …so it is time for us to go green!

It’s time to+動(dòng)詞原形，意為“該到做某事的時(shí)間了”；It’s time for后接名詞或動(dòng)詞-ing形式，也表示“該到做某事的時(shí)間了”。例如：

It is time to leave. = It is time for leaving. 該是離開(kāi)的時(shí)候了。

It’s time for school. 該上學(xué)了。
